Recognition Of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a framework for giving recognition to a person for what they already have learned within their profession.  This refers to recognition of skills, knowledge and competencies acquired in prior studies, work and life experience.

Recognition is given in two main areas:

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a specific assessment process of the applicant’s informal learning and which allows candidates to gain “credit” on the basis of prior learning such as other study, work experience or life experience.

Credits are always awarded to candidates through some or other form of assessment and are not awarded ad hoc.

The SAQA RPL policy makes it clear that the process of RPL is about:

• “Identifying what the candidate knows and can do.
• Matching the candidate’s skills, knowledge and experience to specific standards and the associated assessment criteria of a qualification
• Assessing the candidate against those standards
• Crediting the candidate for skills, knowledge and experience built up through formal, informal and non-formal learning that occurred in the past” (SAQA, 2002:7).
